Flow Props & Fire Props:
🔥What are they, and where to find them🔥

★ What are the Flow Arts & Flow Arts Props

The Flow arts can be described as a combination of free movement, dance and object manipulation all brought together to form something harmonious. Many describe this term slightly different from others, however, it all equivalates to joyous creative expression.

Flow Arts props are tools similar to those seen in various styles of martial arts, although a main difference would be that these tools are used for more free flow movement, rather focusing on striking and defending.

Examples of Flow Art props can be found on this here (prop examples

Fire Safety & Precautions

★ Clothing Choices

When considering spinning any prop, keep in mind that form fitting clothing lacking dangling pieces that can easily be caught is generally preferred. Loosely fitted clothing has the potential to become entangled which can be very dangerous. When it comes to fabric choices, more natural fibers such as cotton and denim can be the safest options to use as they do not melt if they come in contact with a flame while synthetic fibers may melt  almost instantaneously on contact. A link further describing ideal clothing options for Fire Spinning written by "Jessy Spins" will be listed as a reference at the bottom of this page.

★ Hair Care & Product Choices

Regarding hair care, it's typically advised that the individual considering fire spinning does not wear any hair product during their performance. Many products are highly flammable, posing a potentially large risk and absolutely should be avoided. However, wetting your hair with a misting/ spray bottle is a great alternative, especially when dealing with a great amount of fire.

★ Personal Safety & the Safety of Others

Spatial awareness is mandatory when spinning any prop. Before you begin, make yourself aware of all individuals (participating and non-participating) and objects within your vicinity. When spinning any prop, it is advised that any non-participating individual stays at least a distance of fifteen feet or greater away to ensure safety. When spinning fire, a minimum of fifteen feet away from any non-participating individual is generally recommended, however, let's use twenty feet or more as our reference.

Keep in mind that the proper PPE (personal protection equipment) is required and should be available and easily accessible if quickly required. PPE typically includes at least two Fire Blankets or Duvetyn Blankets (a wet towel may be a quick fix substitute), a non-expired fire extinguisher and a Fire Safety present. The Fire Safety is present to ensure props can easily be extinguished using your choice of Fire Blanket. The extinguisher is present to be used in case of emergency. Please see  link at the bottom of this page refereeing to basic fire extinguisher usage.

★ Fuel Station & Dipping Station

Listed here will be a few items one should have in their fueling station:

Proper Fuel Cannister - A proper leak & spill-proof canister that is safe to store fuel is essential for every individual planning to spin fire. Ammo containers are a very popular option for fuel cannisters in the Flow community due to their easy transport, leakproof seals affordable prices and ease of access.

Fire Blankets - Fire Blankets or Duvetyn Blankets are required and should be present at all times. These blankets are a safe way to extinguish a live flame with less potential risk. It is advised that there is a minimum of one fire blanket per fire performer, plus one additional blanket. Therefore, if you have one person spinning at a time, you should have two fire blankets accessible.

Fire Extinguishers - Fire Extinguishers should ALWAYS be present. The placement of this extinguisher is up to the fire safety, however, having the extinguisher easily accessible near the fire blankets is recommended. Please make yourself familiar with how to use a fire extinguisher before accepting the responsibilities of a fire safety.

Fire Safety - Before fire spinning, it is mandatory that a Fire Safety be present. The designated Fire Safety is an individual of your choosing there to assist you in any situation worthy of help, for example, putting out a a live Fire Staff with a Fire Blanket.

★ Types of Fuel

With such an extensive assortment of fuel types on the market, we have listed a few resources below one can use to research their preferred fuel choice. Within the Fire community, Coleman's camp fuel is a popular option, however, before using any of these options, please do you own research.

★ First Aid Resources

Burns are by far the most common form of injury in the fire spinning community, therefore, every individual planning to spin fire should know where to find proper resources on first aid. At the very least, it should be known that when a burn does occur, you'll want to fully immerse the burn under cold water for approximately 15 minutes. The links below go into great detail on Fire Safety and can be found in the websites & resources section.
